(Vacancy Reference #842261144)

Growing in Faith (Discipleship) Priority: 4

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

We, as an “emerging spirit” congregation within The United Church of Canada, continue to challenge the “Old Paradigm” of the Church in order to rebuild and refresh our faith in Christ dwelling within each one of us, we long to overcome the old paradigm of faith that believed in the Bible literally. We have Taize Services several times a year and also have Wednesday Night Gatherings with special guests and professors for studying the Bible, History, Theology and the Emerging Spirit. We have a Book Club, which usually picks books recommended by the Christian Education Committee. These Book Club meetings and special study meetings for various issues have been held in the spring and fall after Sunday Service. We have monthly lunch and learns with various guest speakers. We have spring and fall Movie Nights which gather weekly 4-5 times a season. Our church also has a Sunday School, Youth Group and offers Confirmation Classes once every three years.

We have a specific goal as follows:

Continue actively building, deepening and focusing our efforts on our Wednesday night gatherings and Sunday School, while strengthening and developing the programs we have for rebuilding our progressive faith in Christ as a New Paradigm Church.
Justice, Outreach & Sharing the Good News (Justice and Outreach) Priority: 5

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Continue actively building, deepening and focusing our efforts on our Wednesday night gatherings and Sunday School, while strengthening and developing the programs we have for rebuilding our progressive faith in Christ as a New Paradigm Church.

We have no specific goal.
Leadership Priority: 7

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Leadership is provided through the Council which represents all areas of responsibility. The Council is composed of members of both the former WUC and ITKUC. Currently, each committee has co-chairs representing both of these groups. In broad terms the areas of responsibility are Visioning, Worship, Spiritual Care & Education, Outreach, Finance, Fellowship, Rent and Property. We encourage staff and volunteer leaders to be collaborative, creative and enable others to grow in talent and faith. Our leaders are building our church on its image of a welcoming and inclusive faith community.

We have no specific goal.
Wider Relationships (Ministry Partnerships) Priority: 8

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

WEUC is committed to becoming an Intercultural Church. Becoming an Intercultural church, will preserve the unique culture and heritage that is represented by the Canadian and Korean faith communities as well as others that have embraced our congregation. We believe this Intercultural Church is critical to our future and look to identify new ways of living out in a multicultural community. WEUC connects with the wider community through our seniors groups, youth group, ESL programs, and connections with local senior homes, including Canterbury and Delmanor. WEUC is also a part of the group of North York churches who participate annually in the World Day of Prayer service. Our minister participates in Presbytery and other courts of the church when needed.

We have no specific goal.
Pastoral/Spiritual Care Priority: 2

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

The congregation is very supportive of each other, through friendship, visits, calls, cards etc. Some of the pastoral and spiritual care occurs in the Church, at people’s homes and through visitations. When the elderly in our community of faith become ill, most of our members of the congregation make frequent visits to the hospitals or their homes. We also support bereaved members of the congregation. We have a strong and active Pastoral Care Group. As most of our members have been in church about 30-40 years together, they know each other well and volunteer their time in care tasks such as driving, hospital visits, helping senior members move, etc.

We have a specific goal as follows:

Continue to strengthen our pastoral care and connections with all generations, with a particular focus on young families and enhancing the pastoral care for the Korean speaking members.
Belonging, Extravagant Welcome, Wellness (Spirituality/Self-Care) Priority: 6

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

The members of our congregation get along well, and enjoy fellowship with food, refreshments, laughter, and caring conversations. Occasionally we will have non-regular meetings of the congregation and area-group fellowship meetings outside the Church. Our congregational lunches throughout the year, help to inspire us to become one in Christ. We try to build an intercultural community of faith identity through intercultural ministry. Our congregation supports the health and spiritual growth of our ministers through asking the M&P committee to check in on their spiritual needs and health and providing them for regular times of spiritual refreshment such as study leaves and a sabbatical. We believe our church is a welcoming place for people of diverse cultures to feel at home. Some of the ways we provide a welcome and offer a place of belonging is through our coffee hours, passing the peace, weekly newsletter and the UCW/Men’s groups.

We have no specific goal.
Stewardship Priority: 3

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Stewardship involves finance, investments, legacy gifts & bequests, property, volunteering (human gifts), information technology and administration. Finance & investments are managed by the Board of Trustees and are deemed to be sustainable. Although the offerings and other income are insufficient to cover the operating expenses, the income from investments has so far been adequate to keep the budgets roughly in balance. Our strengths lie in human gifts (volunteering) in the areas of financial, investment & property management, information technology and administration. Interest from investments contribute to the church’s balance. The level of stewardship at WEUC has been greatly strengthened by the amalgamation of former ITKUC and WUC.

We have no specific goal.
Worship Priority: 1

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

We currently have two services every Sunday. The first is in English at 10:30 am and second is in Korean at 12:30pm. Since we amalgamated into "WE United Church", we have a joint service once a month with the English speaking and Korean speaking members. This service is in English with Korean translation for the Sermon, Prayer of the people, and Reading Scripture etc. It takes place on the second Sunday of every month and additional joint services are held on occasions such as Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving Sunday. One project we are presently working is to translate many of the hymns from “More Voices” into Korean for use especially in the Joint Service. Currently we sing hymns from More Voices with our Korean translation, which we feel is very essential to have an effective joint service. Our Korean services are fairly formal and prepared mostly by the lay leaders and music director with a 12-15 member choir. Music has always been an essential element of the service and two instruments, a pipe organ and a concert grand piano are used. We are proud to confess a “New Creed” in the order of Service and respect each one’s confession of faith with inclusivity and openness based on progressive academic and biblical approaches. The English services are led by our minister. The choir has 7 members and they sing weekly. We have weekly children’s time and Sunday school during the service. The youth are active within worship and help with the audio/visual equipment. We use TV screens for various purposes in both services and sermons. The joint worship service and the Korean service are both broadcasted via YouTube as well as on our website every Sunday.

We have a specific goal as follows:

We want to have more Joint services every month, possibly every Sunday.
