CoF Ministry Articulation Profile

(Vacancy Reference #672288821)

Growing in Faith (Discipleship) Priority: 4

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Sunday School (12 years and younger), which serves the whole congregation at 9:30 a.m., includes Children’s Time during “Listening to the Word”. The youth meet irregularly the last Saturday of the month. Women’s Group (“UCW”) holds bi-monthly meetings and is open to both members and friends. Whole church fellowship/study groups (Canaan, Career and Cell groups) serve various (but not all) age groups. We have yet to form a men’s group. Weekly sports ministry (badminton, floor hockey, softball, line dance) is open to both members and friends with most meetings including devotional and reflection and/or sharing time.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To love more fully as a Jesus follower through the learning of his stories and actions of his ministry by formation of study groups.
Justice, Outreach & Sharing the Good News (Justice and Outreach) Priority: 7

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Regular, church-wide support of the Mission & Service Fund with weekly “Minutes for Mission” segment during the 9:30 a.m. service. Ongoing support of the “Out of the Cold” program at Knox UC. Regular support of the Agincourt Community Centre Food Bank and regular participation in “10,000 Trees for the Rouge”. Sunday School children/youth sponsor a World Vision Child with funding raised through various activities and luncheons. The T.H. Chan Memorial Chinese School and The Cheer Daycare Centre both include students and children from a wide catchment area (these are both community services run by church members). The Chinese School also holds Mathematic classes which are open to students of all cultural backgrounds. Increasing TCUC’s visibility in the community and neighbourhood is seen as important thus the report detailing wider use of our facilities by community groups was tabled (2016).

We have a specific goal as follows:

To increase support of local organizations (currently often done in partnership with other communities of faith) which are supported by the UCC through visible promotion within our local community of faith.
Leadership Priority: 3

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Development of leaders and lay leaders based on ‘as needed basis’ (no regular development program exists). Theological Education Fund available for members called to a vocation serving the church. Leaders make use of UCC/Conference/Presbytery office/website resources. Lack of focussed leadership training hampers engagement of members from a wider range of ages. Two documents, “M&P Membership Criteria” and “Procedure for the Resolution of Conflict” help maintain healthy, pastoral relationships. Up-to-date Police Record checks are mandatory for all who work with children and youth under age of 18.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To develop a stronger leadership core in a ‘Servanthood’ model of ministry through a ‘Training’ model in an encouraging and passionate ministry because Jesus said, “… whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26-28, NRSV).
Wider Relationships (Ministry Partnerships) Priority: 8

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

UCC Chinese Association connections maintained with Chinese United pastoral charges throughout Canada. Support of the UCC Emergency Appeal for the Fort McMurray Fire. We have partnered with other United Churches to support wider UCC Refugee Sponsorship initiatives. “U-Talks”, a joint initiative with both Ebenezer and Knox UC, aimed to share with a wider audience, informed speakers and leaders both within and without UCC circles. Representation at Presbytery and Conference meetings.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To encourage and develop relationships with other faith groups, both Christian and others, to improve our effectiveness in outreach and aid (our community of faith being small in numbers).
Pastoral/Spiritual Care Priority: 2

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Visitations (by minister plus volunteer) to members who are hospitalized or in home care facilities are arranged weekly. More recently, visitation has been expanded to include members who are not ill. Four ‘Minister’s Tea Parties” were held with members of the congregation. The minister continues to invite members for personal conversation and prayer during regular office hours.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To develop an especially visible and felt Caring Ministry. Increase visitations, through regular training, to mobilize lay leaders thus provide ready, listening ears by trained leaders because Jesus knew we all need to feel loved. Provide counselling (e.g. youth, marriage, parenting, senior) when needed.
Belonging, Extravagant Welcome, Wellness (Spirituality/Self-Care) Priority: 5

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

Sunday coffee time held between worship services. Both services incorporate “Passing of the Peace” whereby most everyone leaves the comfort of their seat to welcome as many as possible with a handshake or hug. In addition to automatic door openers installed at the rear entrance ramp plans have been made to renovate the main floor washroom to have a building which is not disabling to any user. We have a simple website for accessing sermons and other information.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To develop a warm and welcoming initial point of contact for newcomers through the creation of a New Member Ministry. To create an environment that is not disabling to anyone. To provide educational workshops to introduce members to methods of self- care and develop or increase our sense of spirituality in our daily living as well as develop a better, visible sense of community to newcomers and visitors.
Stewardship Priority: 6

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

This working group promotes wise use of resources (including composting, reusing, and energy consumption) and yearly recognizes and thanks volunteers. This group’s mission is to “Gather, Invest, Employ” in three areas -- Operation Management, Fund-Raising and, Steward of Talents and informs members on the budget process and financial situation and has made great strides in educating members on faithful stewardship. All ministry personnel, staff and lay leaders/volunteers complete the Ministry of Labour Occupational Health and Safety Training certificate. Trustees overlook care and maintenance of the building and contents, ensuring adequate insurance coverage, administer investments and funds, and establish the procedures to deal with emergencies.

We have a specific goal as follows:

To continue to provide an encouraging and holistic view of church resource usage.
Worship Priority: 1

Description of Current Ministry (6-8 sentences):

The English Service liturgy is open to exploration and introduction of different forms of expression and ritual and weekly incorporates use of contemporary style music. Combined worship services (with Cantonese worshippers) are held on festival days (Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day) and include a fellowship luncheon.

We have no specific goal.
